Creative corporate portraits

Recent commission for a corporate client who wanted portraits for press release and some more informal portraits of the corporate team around their offices. Corporate portraits should be creative and have an edge to them. This can help your corporate branding stand out from your competitors. The problem with shooting this type of corporate portrait is that unless the clients are up for being creative then the portraits can end up on the cutting room floor. In the instances when a client has gone for the more creative approach and it has really paid off for them (and me). I shot a campaign for a national law firm over 10 years ago and I am still getting requests from other law firms to reproduce their style of photography.

I have noticed an increase in commissions for social media portraits. Clients are starting to notice that their social media portrait or avatar on Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn needs to be as good as other corporate portraits they use other media. You do not get a second chance to make a good first impression. Make sure your social media portrait avatar is saying all the right things about you. Don’t upload a family portrait of you on a boat at the weekend or half way up a mountain, your social media portrait is selling you and your business to potential clients.

Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn can be great way to network your business. But if your social media portrait avatar sends out the wrong signals ie it does not make you look professional and approachable, what you post, comment or tweet about will have to contend with this negative impression.

Corporate Photography

 

This was taken last month at the new London Stock Exchange in Paternoster Square. I have been experimenting with photographing through glass. This can diminish image quality, but I think the benefits of interesting reflections balance this out. This was shot across the London Stock Exchange glass stairwell. I think the reflections add atmosphere to the photograph, and give a better feel of business in The City.

Recent commercial commission for an excellent designer in Hampshire. I spent a day capturing natural photographs in an aerospace business in Southampton.

This is where I add value to a project as a photographer. I change an otherwise fairly ordinary looking commercial factory into a set of contemporary and interesting images.

I have worked in Hampshire as a commercial photographer for over 20 years. When I started, commercial commissions were normally art directed and involved a photographer’s assistant and photographer to carry loads of heavy lighting and medium format photography kit. Most Hampshire based companies would commission photography via an ad or design agencies and the photo shoot would be visualised so I would have to try and capture good commercial images that related to the visuals. This process was very time consuming and it took a long hard day to shoot half a dozen images. I decided about 10 years ago that this commercial photography process was slow, expensive and lacked any spontaneity.

All my commercial photography commissions wether they are in Hampshire or London are shot without art direction. The client will brief me with a shot list and then will let me capture good creative photography throughout the day. As a commercial photographer working within tight budgets and time constraints, I can now produce a wide variety of contemporary commercial images in a single day.
